There was this time when I couldn’t communicate what I wanted to say in a meaningful way. I tried and tried but nothing would come out. I had lost the ability to speak my truth. This not only affected my confidence but I lost my purpose in what I was trying to do in the world.

This was right after my divorce in 2021, when I was trying to build my own creative agency where I was trying to do everything and anything all at once and literally, was getting nowhere. I still remember my business coach and close friend at the time telling me, “bro, just breathe, and take it one day at a time.”

Not knowing what to say as a speaker on a stage with a room full of people, whether online or offline, is one of the most talked about fears in the world. It’s up there with fear of heights, fear of spiders and fear of public speaking.

And why is that? Is it because we have been brainwashed as children to fear public speaking? Or is it because we haven’t practiced the skill enough? We all know if we don’t spend the time in practice, through discipline, we won’t be comfortable being uncomfortable.

This is why finding your voice is so important when YOU want to communicate to others in a way that speaks your truth! Remember, you are not selling your truth. You are telling a story that resonates with your audience in a useful way that solves their problem! Not yours.

This is what good marketing looks like! Stop selling yourself short and practice speaking! First by yourself, like talk therapy, recording yourself through your phone, looking at yourself until you become comfortable with the person staring back at you!

When you get bored talking to yourself find online public forums, spaces on X, live streams you can guest speak on a panel, where you can request the mic, and tell your story! People want to hear your truth! I guarantee you! You have to try or you won’t succeed. Because, let’s be honest, no one will do it for you but YOU!
