Work for FREE?
As I gear up for The Digital Nomad Experience (DNE) Initiative, I’m reminded how much work I do for free.
No one is paying me to create the schedule, write up the weekly newsletter, or host all these AMA’s. The few that do I’m very grateful for so thank you!
But I’ve been grinding on this newsletter for 33 weeks with little to no help. I’m not complaining. I’m just telling you like it is.
When you’re building your own brand/business no one is paying you to build it. You just do it because you love it and if you keep showing up, staying consistent, people will start to notice.
Look at it like community service for yourself, and that’s okay, initially. It takes time to build awareness to develop a service or product that people will invest in and ultimately YOU.
We live in an attention economy where our content will only get seen by our community or at times not at all. It all depends on what you are posting and is it relevant and does it resonate with your audience in such a way that it gets them to act.
Lots of people won’t see the content you constantly ship, and that’s okay. Sure, they can enable profile notifications but let’s be real–people have busy lives. Time is the only currency we can never get back.
It’s when people comment on your posts, always reply, thanking them. It builds trust and credibility in the space. You want people to care about what you put out there, begin to care about what they are posting, too! Reciprocation is huge. Build relationships by investing in people who invest in you.
I know working for yourself for free isn’t sexy. But if you stay disciplined, your work will one day pay off. You will have people knocking on your door wanting to pay you for the same thing you have been doing for free since the start.
